Activities for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

1. Divide group of friends/Homeschool Group/Class into four teams: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. These names should be put on paper and drawn by the teams at the beginning of the book. Teams will work together on cooperative learning projects, as well as earning points for their group based on good behavior and responsibility. Points will also be taken away for missing homework and not cooperating with other team members or the class. Allow the winning team to be the planners for any upcoming party you have scheduled.

 2. Make a scrapbook for Harry Potter's first year at Hogwarts. Let the kids draw pictures and retell experiences Harry had during his first year at school. This can be done in Microsoft PowerPoint and presented to the class by each team. This can serve as an alternative assessment for Language Arts. A rubric for scoring will arrive by owl soon.

3. Teach your kids to play chess. You might even tape off a chess board, and play a life size chess tournament with the teams.

4. Draw a reflection you "desire" from the mirror Erised. Write an explanation of your picture. Discuss the possible effects of such a mirror if it existed.

5. Make a brochure on paper, or in Microsoft Publisher, for a new student going to Hogwarts.

6. Design a new broom. Plan a strategy for marketing your creation.

7. Write a song to cheer on your team. Perform for the class.

8. Create a new game to play on broomsticks complete with rules and evaluate.

9. Research owls. In teams, decide on a specific owl for your mascot. Prepare an essay on your owl to publish on our WebPages. You must analyze the owl, write the rough draft, proof read, and then rewrite to publish complete with a picture of the owl.

10. Write predictions for Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

11. Write a letter to the Dursley's congratulating them on Harry's invitation to Hogwarts.

12. Explore probability with Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans. In teams, the kids can create their own flavors and explore.

13. Make character maps.

14. Solve logic problems. Be sure to stop before reading the solution to the problem in the book. Print out the problem and allow the teams to try to solve the problem.

15. Make a fish organizer to show the cause an effect relationships in Harry's adventures.

16. Write a newspaper article that might have appeared in the newspaper the day after Harry's family died.

17. Create a catalog of the latest Witch and Wizard wear.

18. Make W-I-Z-A-R-D Bingo Cards

19.  Play pin the Pig Tail on Dudley

20. Slay the Dragon (Make a dragon Piñata)

21. Guess the number of Every Flavor Beans in a jar.

22. Set up a fortune telling booth (Mrs. Trewlaney HP III)

23. Create an Obstacle course (Harry Potter Tournament)
